Nunn Leads Call for Comprehensive Russia Sanctions to Bolster U.S. Negotiating Power

WASHINGTON, D.C. Representative Zach Nunn (IA-03), a Colonel in the Air Force Reserve and Chair of the Republican Study Committee’s (RSC) National Security Task Force, joined RSC Chair August Pfluger (TX-11) in sending a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune calling for a sanctions package that would provide the President with unprecedented leverage to force Russia to the negotiating table and end the war in Ukraine.

“President Trump just put Putin on the clock. Now it’s up to Congress to deliver the tools needed to hit the Russian war machine if he refuses to come to the table,” said Rep. Nunn. “The sanctions package we’ve outlined gives the President real leverage to protect U.S. interests, support our allies, and force Russia to end its aggression.”

Coming just two days after President Trump issued a 50-day deadline for Putin to reach a ceasefire deal, the letter is designed to align congressional action with White House pressure, urging the inclusion of several key provisions in any sanctions package, including:

    • A total freeze on Russian government assets and transactions in the U.S.
    • Secondary sanctions on Chinese and North Korean entities aiding Russia’s war effort.
    • Crackdowns on Russia’s shadow fleet of oil tankers used to evade sanctions.
    • A dynamic oil price cap mechanism to ratchet down revenue from energy exports.
    • Sanctions on entities facilitating Russian financial operations, territorial theft, and gray zone attacks on U.S. allies.

The letter calls for the sanctions regime to persist, at the President’s discretion, until Russia agrees to a permanent ceasefire.
