DES MOINES — U.S. Representative Zach Nunn (IA-03) today announced that he secured more than $1.8 million for the Walnut Creek Family YMCA in West Des Moines. This federal investment will support improving the health and wellness of the community, expanding the YMCA’s youth development programming, and strengthening the safety of the facility.
“The YMCA is a place where young people can connect, grow, and learn in a safe environment,” said Rep. Nunn. “The aging facility at Walnut Creek Family YMCA needs improvements. With this investment, we’re doing the most good for the most people to improve a community staple.”
Rep. Nunn secured $1,808,000 through the community project funding process, which allows members to designate funding for critical initiatives. The funding was included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024 which was signed into law on Saturday, March 4, 2024.
“The Walnut Creek YMCA stands as a cornerstone of the Western Polk County community,” said Cameron Nicholson, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines. “With the proposed enhancements to our facilities, we are set to significantly elevate and broaden our services to children, families, and seniors. We are immensely grateful for Congressman Zach Nunn’s leadership and advocacy in securing federal funding for these vital renovations.”
The $1.8 million investment will help fund essential renovations to the entrance and main lobby, relocate the front offices to develop a multipurpose space, and expand the YMCA’s youth development programming.
Rep. Nunn announced the new funding investment during a press conference at the Walnut Creek Family YMCA in West Des Moines with Cameron Nicholson.
