Protecting Care, Preventing Fraud

More than 150,000 Iowans in our communities rely on Medicaid for healthcare. Another 60,000 count on SNAP to know where their next meal is coming from.

This morning, I visited MercyOne in Des Moines to hear directly from doctors about what these programs mean for patients — especially seniors, kids, and those with disabilities — who depend on them every single day.

At the same time, we can’t ignore the fact that our system is wide open to waste, fraud, and abuse:

💸 Medicaid fraud cost taxpayers over $7 billion in 2024
📊 Improper payments totaled $31 billion in Medicaid alone
⚠️ Between 2018 and 2022, up to $521 billion was lost to fraud across major benefit programs

Our mission: Defend Medicaid and SNAP benefits Iowans rely on while cutting out fraud, and I introduced legislation to do exactly that.

The Defending Medicaid and SNAP Resolution would block ANY cut to benefits for children, seniors, pregnant women, or Iowans with disabilities.

President Trump supports this approach, and I’m proud to lead the fight in Congress to defend Iowans from D.C. cuts.

Bottom Line: We can protect essential care for vulnerable Iowans while cracking down on waste, fraud, and abuse, and that’s exactly what we’re fighting to do.
