DES MOINES — In the wake of the barbaric attack against Israel by Hamas over the weekend, U.S. Representatives Zach Nunn (IA-03) and Don Davis (NC-01) today announced a bipartisan resolution, co-sponsored by more than two dozen of their House colleagues, declaring unwavering support for our strongest ally and calling for additional assistance to Israel.
“The Iranian-backed terrorist attack perpetrated by Hamas against Israel this weekend was barbaric and demands a strong response,” said Rep. Nunn. “Congress must be unwavering in our support of Israel’s right to defend herself, including through immediate intelligence, diplomatic, and military support from the United States. We must not abandon our strongest ally in the Middle East during her moment of need.”
On Saturday, Hamas terrorists, supported by Iran, perpetrated a surprise attack on Israel, launching thousands of rockets and entering Israel by land, sea, and air. The attack has so far resulted in the death of hundreds of people, including American citizens. Hundreds more were injured and kidnapped. In response, Israel has declared war on Hamas.
“In the shadow of history, we’re reminded once again of the unyielding aggression faced by our steadfast ally, Israel. The recent attacks by Hamas mark the most severe conflict since the horrific Yom Kippur War,” said Rep. Davis. “With over 800 Israeli lives lost, the unprovoked assault reminds us of our ironclad U.S.-Israel alliance. As Members of Congress focused on bipartisanship, we remain unwavering in our commitment to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Israel in defense of those who seek her destruction.”
The resolution condemns the acts of terrorism committed by Hamas against Israel and directs the Administration to provide support, including stating that Congress:
- Declares its unwavering support for the State of Israel and stands ready to consider urgent requests for additional assistance Israel may require to defend its people and safeguard its sovereignty;
- Affirms that Israel, as a sovereign state, is entitled to act in self-defense against Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and associated forces, and their state sponsors;
- Finds the that cross-border attacks, murders, and kidnappings constitute acts of international terrorism and aggression;
- Calls on the President to provide intelligence, military, and diplomatic support to the Government of Israel in response to this terrorist attack; and
- Calls on all governments harboring Hamas personnel to immediately expel those individuals from their territory.
