WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative Zach Nunn (IA-03) today passed four bills addressing national security and terrorist financing through the House Financial Services Committee. Collectively, the bills combat China, Russia, and the Taliban while helping American farmers, community safety, and digital security.
“National security is mission critical to everybody—impacting Iowa’s families, farmers, and community safety,” Rep. Nunn said. “We must do more to track, combat, and bankrupt terrorists and our adversaries that put American lives at risk every day. Each of my bills that just passed are a strong step forward toward that goal.”
Rep. Nunn led or co-lead four bills that passed through the July 26, 2023 markup by the House Financial Services Committee:
- Rep. Nunn introduced the bipartisan Financial Technology Protection Act in April. This legislation would protect American’s freedom to use emerging digital assets by combating money laundering, terrorist activity, and other illicit financing.
- The Stop Fentanyl Money Laundering Act—introduced alongside Representatives Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-03), Andy Barr (KY-06), and Young Kim (CA-40) in May—would investigate money laundering being used for fentanyl trafficking by China and Mexico in financial institutions.
- The bipartisan No Russian Agriculture Act would support projects that reduce our reliance on Russian agriculture and put the focus back on supporting American farmers. Rep. Nunn introduced this legislation on July 25 with House Financial Services Ranking Member Maxine Waters (CA-43).
- The bipartisan Exposing China’s Support for the Taliban Act—introduced with Representative Stephen Lynch (MA-08) —would require the U.S. Department of the Treasury to work to combat Chinese financial and strategic support for the Taliban.
All four of these legislative proposals were approved by the Financial Services Committee. They now await consideration by the full House of Representatives.
