Des Moines, Iowa — With the expiration of Title 42 this week, Representative Zach Nunn (IA-03) is taking action to fix the crisis at the southern border by introducing and voting for legislation that addresses fentanyl and border security.
“As a military officer, I’ve worked on operations to help secure our border and seen the crisis firsthand. Today, every community is now a border town. The situation at the border is a humanitarian and security nightmare, and it will only get worse with the expiration of Title 42,” said Rep. Nunn. “Working to reform our broken immigration system, end the humanitarian crisis, and stop fentanyl trafficking should not be a partisan issue, which is why it’s so important to work across the aisle on this issue. To start, extending Title 42 is critical piece of the puzzle to stop the mass influx of illegal crossings.”
Specifically, today, Rep. Nunn took several actions to help secure the border:
Rep. Nunn voted for the Secure the Border Act, which would increase the number of border patrol agents, strengthen physical security, protect unaccompanied children from human trafficking, streamline the asylum process, and more. The bill passed the House of Representatives 219 to 213.
Additionally, with the expiration of Title 42 today, Rep. Nunn helped introduce a bipartisan bill to extend the expulsion authority for two years. This bill is bipartisan with Reps. Jared Golden (ME-02), Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06), Don Davis (NC-01), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01), David Valadao (CA-22) and Wiley Nickel (NC-13) introducing in the House. This bill has a Senate companion introduced by Senators Thom Tillis (NC), Krysten Sinema (AZ), Joe Manchin (WV) and John Cornyn (TX).
Rep. Nunn also helped introduce two bills to stop fentanyl from flowing across our border:
-
The Stop Fentanyl Money Laundering Act—introduced alongside Reps. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-03), Andy Barr (KY-06) and Young Kim (CA-40)—would investigate money laundering being used for fentanyl trafficking by China and Mexico in financial institutions.
-
The Stop Chinese Fentanyl Act—introduced alongside Reps. Chris Pappas (NH-01), Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-03), Greg Murphy (NC-03) and Morgan McGarvey (KY-03)—would hold Chinese entities accountable for producing, selling, financing or transporting synthetic opioids.
