WASHINGTON, D.C. — Representatives Zach Nunn (IA-03) and Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37), co-chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth, introduced a bipartisan resolution to recognize May as National Foster Care Month and honor the children, families, and professionals involved in the foster care system. The resolution follows President Trump’s designation of May as Foster Care Month and encourages Congress to pursue policies that improve outcomes for youth in care and strengthen support for foster families across the country.
“Every child deserves a safe, loving, and permanent home. As a dad to six kids, including two Kelly and I were blessed to adopt, this resolution is personal to me,” said Rep. Nunn. “This month and every month, we honor the foster parents, the parents who choose to adopt, and the social workers who step up for kids with nowhere else to turn. I will keep working to build a system that helps more families who are ready to open their homes and their hearts to foster, adopt, and change a child’s life.”
“All children deserve stable environments where they can learn, grow, and thrive,” said Rep. Kamlager-Dove. “I am proud to re-introduce this bipartisan resolution alongside the Foster Youth Caucus to recognize the resilience of our foster youth, honor those who make a difference in their lives, and recommit to passing policies that help ensure all children have a safe and loving home.”
According to the most recent data from the U.S. Children’s Bureau, more than 369,000 children are currently living in foster care nationwide. These children often face significant challenges, including disparities in health, education, and long-term stability.
National Foster Care Month was first established in 1988 to recognize the importance of foster care and those who work tirelessly to support vulnerable children. The Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth provides a forum for lawmakers to advance bipartisan solutions that improve the lives of youth and families within the child welfare system.
Foster Youth Caucus co-chairs Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05), Gwen Moore (WI-04), Don Bacon (NE-02), and Nancy Mace (SC-01) also joined Rep. Nunn to introduce the resolution.
