Suicide rates triple for veterans in the first 12 months following separation from the military. In Iowa, the rate of veteran suicide is four times higher than the national average.
This is a major problem that I’m on a mission to solve.
Great news: today, the House Veterans Affairs Committee passed my bipartisan bill, the Daniel J. Harvey Jr. and Adam Lambert Improving Servicemember Transition to Reduce Veteran Suicide Act, to tackle this crisis.
I’ve worked on this bill with the parents of Cpl. Adam Lambert of Adel, who tragically lost his life to suicide after returning home from serving in the Marines. He was a son, brother, proud Marine, and bravely raised his hand to serve our country.
Together, we’re making a bipartisan commitment to save the lives of those who proudly wear the uniform to protect our country:
Our work isn’t done yet, so I’ll keep fighting to ensure this important bill becomes law.
