I have someone I’d like you to meet.

I want to share a quick story with you about a seventeen-year-old kid who lost his life too soon.

Sebastian Kidd was a normal high schooler – he competed in football, wrestling, track, and golf. He loved to fish, skateboard, and hang out with friends. He also was battling depression and anxiety.

Despite being prescribed medication by his doctor, he was persuaded to purchase drugs on Snapchat. He thought he bought Percocet – but instead, he was sold a deadly fentanyl pill. Sebastian took this pill and didn’t wake up the next morning.

Sebastian’s parents, Deric and Kathy, joined me last week for President Biden’s State of the Union Address. I’m honored that they are sharing their story with us and are here in D.C. with me to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl.

Unfortunately, too many Iowans have experienced tragic losses like Deric and Kathy. I’ll continue to fight in Congress for bipartisan solutions to address the border crisis and opioid epidemic that is wreaking havoc on our communities.

We can’t bring back Sebastian, but we can and must work together to save lives and prevent senseless deaths in the future.
