Fighting for Affordable Housing

Our country is facing an affordable housing crisis. That’s why earlier this year, I was proud to see my bill that makes it easier for communities to build affordable homes signed into law.

But our fight isn’t over yet. This crisis continues to impact communities across the country:

  • There’s a shortage of 7.3 million affordable and available rental homes.
  • In rural Iowa, 10.6 percent of the population lives in poverty, and the average household income is more than $10,000 less than the national average.
  • Nearly 40 percent of renters in Iowa spend nearly one-third of their income on housing.

Today I hosted a roundtable in Des Moines with leadership from across industries and local government to discuss steps we can take right here in Iowa to improve affordable housing options.

Our discussion made one thing clear: we need to think outside the box to fix this problem. I’ll keep fighting to ensure every Iowan can thrive in their hometown.
