America’s servicemembers make huge sacrifices to our country – and some even make the ultimate sacrifice. As the Scripture tells us, “There is no greater love than this – that a man should lay down his life for his friends.”
When a servicemember makes that ultimate sacrifice, they leave behind a family – now fractured – of dedicated servants who gave up almost everything for their country. This Gold Star Families Remembrance Week, I want to honor those who devote their lives to our nation.
I met with Hana and Kannan Mackey today, a Gold Star Family from Grinnell, who tragically lost their father in 2010. They shared their memories of Matt – a doting father, loving husband, and a decorated member of the U.S. Army.
These families endure immeasurable grief and loss. I remain dedicated to ensuring they have the full support of Congress and their communities. We will forever be indebted to the families who lost a loved one fighting for Old Glory.
