Preparing for success

A four-year degree doesn’t always guarantee success – and it’s time we start saying it. Community colleges play a key role in preparing people for good paying jobs. I stopped by Southwestern Community College (SWICC) in Creston this week to learn more about their training programs.

Right now – there’s a shortage of truck drivers, nurses, and more. In Congress, I’ve been fighting to help community colleges train the next generation for these roles:

  • Training more nurses by leading bipartisan legislation to help colleges hire more nursing educators
  • Investing in CDL programs by securing $1 million for the Des Moines Area Community College Transportation Institute Education Center and the Indian Hills Community College Truck Driver Education Center
  • Fighting to strengthen our workforce by championing the CAREERS Act to support training opportunities in rural communities
  • Promoting apprenticeships by cosponsoring the Strengthening Youth Apprenticeships Act to connect students to these opportunities

Bottom Line: Skilled workers continue to be in high demand. I’ll always help promote pathways to success that are good for students, employers, and our communities.
