Our democracy is a beacon of freedom and opportunity, and it is built on the principle that the American people—not foreign adversaries—should decide the future of our nation. Unfortunately, that principle doesn’t stop bad actors from exploiting loopholes to buy influence.
For example, this year, a major online fundraising platform for political campaigns did not block donations made by foreign-purchased gift cards – potentially allowing illicit foreign money to influence the outcome of our elections.
That’s unacceptable – and must be stopped today. That’s why I voted for the SHIELD Act to strengthen campaign finance laws and instill confidence that foreign actors won’t be able to influence our elections. This commonsense bill will block foreign funding and certify that every contribution received actually comes from the individual whose name is on the contribution.
Bottom Line: Every American should have full confidence in our elections – and I’ll fight to ensure that’s the case.
