Sarah Root was only 21 years old when she was killed nearly nine years ago by a drunk driver. Just 16 hours before her death, Sarah graduated college summa cum laude from Bellevue University.
Her loss was painful enough, but her parents received tough news while planning her funeral: the man who got behind the wheel drunk and caused this tragic accident – an illegal immigrant – posted bond and was released from jail. Shockingly, he disappeared and never faced justice for his actions that took Sarah’s life.
This should never happen. It’s why I’m helping lead Sarah’s Law in Congress – to close a loophole in the law by requiring law enforcement to detain illegal immigrants who are charged with killing or seriously injuring another person.
Bottom Line: This is a step in the right direction – but there is more work to be done to protect our communities.
