🚔 Strengthening local policing

Iowa law enforcement is facing a staffing crisis: too few officers, too many calls, and too much strain on the departments protecting our hometowns and communities across the state.

Why it matters: When patrol units are understaffed and specialized roles in forensics, cybercrime, and investigations are left unfilled, Iowans are left waiting longer for help.

The challenge: Filling these gaps without lowering standards or putting more strain on active-duty officers who already have their hands full serving and protecting Iowa communities.

That’s why I introduced the bipartisan legislation, the Retired Law Enforcement Officers Continuing Service Act, in order to:

👨‍💼  Hire experienced retired officers to fill vacant civilian roles including completing background checks, conducting digital forensics, and providing lab support
🧑‍🏫  Empower retired offers to help train the next generation of civilian public safety staff
🚓  Enable active-duty officers to remain focused on patrol, response, and community safety

Bottom Line: I will always back the blue, and I’m proud to lead bipartisan solutions to ensure our law enforcement has the resources, training, and personnel to keep our Iowa communities safe and secure.
