It’s day six of the government shutdown — and we’re just over a week away from our servicemembers missing a paycheck.
The problem: When Washington shuts down, nearly every federal employee is either furloughed or required to work without pay.
That includes Iowa’s servicemembers — like the 1,800 currently deployed to the Middle East — who are protecting our country without a paycheck.
That’s not right. If our troops aren’t getting paid, Congress shouldn’t either.Â
That’s why I asked the Chief Administrative Officer of the House to withhold my paycheck until the government reopens. I won’t take a cent until Iowa’s essential federal workers, including our servicemembers, get what they’ve earned.
Bottom Line: If Washington can’t do its job, Members of Congress shouldn’t get paid. I’ll keep fighting to reopen the government, restore pay for essential workers, and bring Iowa commonsense back to D.C.
