Whether it’s a family of three in Bloomfield or a family of ten in Atlantic, every Iowan should have food on the table. But today, one in eight Iowa households struggles with food insecurity — and Washington gridlock is about to make it worse.
The problem: Unless the Senate acts now and passes the commonsense resolution I supported to keep the government open, 330,000 Iowans — including moms, kids, and working families — are at risk of losing access to SNAP and WIC benefits.
That means essential groceries, formula, and baby food could be out of reach for families who did nothing wrong.
Why it matters: If D.C. can’t get its act together in the next three days, it’s our communities that will pay the price. More Iowans will go hungry, and food banks will be under even more pressure to fill the gap.
That’s why I visited the Iowa Food Bank this week — to hear directly from those on the front lines. ⬇️
Food banks aren’t meant to replace federal programs, but they’re stepping up when Washington won’t. They are doing heroic work, and I’m proud to be in their corner.
Bottom Line: Families are counting on Washington to do its job. We’ll keep fighting to reopen the government and make sure every Iowa family can put food on the table.
