After 40 days of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel.Â
How we got here: On October 1, 2025, the government shut down after a small group of Democrats in the Senate refused to pass the clean funding bill that the House already passed. Instead, Senate Democrats held the government hostage, demanding $1.5 trillion in partisan spending and leaving Iowans to pay the price.Â
Where we are now: Late last night, after weeks of unnecessary gridlock, bipartisan negotiations brought eight Senate Democrats to the table to finally agree to a commonsense plan to fund the government.
For six long weeks, Iowans endured unnecessary hardship and paid the price of Washington’s political games. And in the end, the same responsible plan that could have kept the government open from day one was ultimately accepted after needless delay. Â
What happens next: The House is expected to vote on the Senate-passed package later this week. I’m heading back to D.C. to vote to reopen the government and make sure Iowans finally receive the paychecks, services, and certainty they deserve.Â
Bottom Line: Iowans do their jobs every day – and they expect Washington to do the same. It’s time to end the political games, pass this clean funding bill, and get our government working again.
