Washington’s shutdown nearly grounded the government — but at Des Moines International Airport, it was our TSA officers and air traffic controllers who kept Iowa flying.
The problem: When the government shuts down, the men and women who keep America’s airports running don’t get a break — they just stop getting paid.
And while airports across the country faced FAA-mandated flight reductions and TSA slowdowns, Des Moines kept moving and avoided major cancellations and delays. That’s the difference Iowa professionalism makes.
Why it matters: Our skies — and the people who keep them safe — shouldn’t be collateral damage because of a political debate in Washington.
That’s why today, I presented certificates of appreciation to the TSA officers and air traffic controllers who never stopped showing up.
It was one small way to say thank you on behalf of travelers, families, and our entire community. You can also watch my remarks here ⬇️
Bottom Line: Shutdowns don’t just disrupt Washington — they squeeze real people here at home. I’ve never voted to shut the government down, and I’ll keep fighting for those who show up for Iowa every day.
