Protecting Social Security Benefits for Iowans

More than 124,000 Iowans depend on Social Security, and these retirees deserve to count on the benefits they’ve earned without fear of D.C. bureaucrats trying to take it away. For years, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has mismanaged benefits, only to turn around and demand repayment from seniors going back decades. Some seniors have been asked to pay back thousands of dollars—money they rely on for groceries, medication, and housing.

Throwing a senior who is already struggling with the high cost of living into a financial crisis when they are not at fault is simply unacceptable. That’s why I just introduced the bipartisan Social Security Overpayment Relief Act, which would prohibit the Social Security Administration (SSA) from reclaiming overpayments older than 10 years unless there was fraud involved.

Bottom Line: I’ll keep fighting to ensure we keep the promise made to Iowa retirees and protect Iowans from suffering the consequences of mistakes made by D.C. bureaucrats.
