⏱️ Iowa’s Veterans Can’t Wait

As a 20-year combat veteran, I’m fighting to make sure Iowa’s 15,000 National Guardsmen and over 160,000 veterans don’t pay the price for D.C. dysfunction.

Zoom out: It’s been 35 days since the government shutdown began, causing paycheck uncertainty, VA service slowdowns, and making it harder for servicemembers and veterans to get the benefits they count on.

I believe leadership starts with listening, which is why I joined Iowa veterans for a listening session at a Hy-Vee in West Des Moines this morning.

Frustration was front and center as we talked through the causes behind the gridlock — partisanship, politics, and a blame game in D.C. impacting lives in Iowa.

Why it matters: Iowa’s servicemembers and veterans have already given so much for our country. They risk their lives, spend time away from family, and protect our way of life every day, and they shouldn’t have to fight Washington to get what they’ve earned.

I voted to keep the government open because a shutdown is never the answer. Bringing stories and experiences like the ones I heard today are part of the fight to convince D.C. to set aside the partisan games and deliver for those who sacrifice so much.

Bottom Line: Iowa’s veterans and servicemembers have upheld their duty to serve and defend our country. It’s time for Washington to honor that same commitment by reopening the government and delivering the stability our heroes deserve.
